To kick off Start the Week with #Starkers, we bring you Aphrodite of Knidos, thought to be the first ever life-size female nude. Too provocative for Island of Kos, it was purchased for a temple on Knidos, where it swiftly became a lucrative tourist attraction. Designed by Praxiteles in the 4th century BCE, the statue was said to be so lifelike that a visitor tried to make love to it. Centuries later, the writer Pliny tells us that the mark of his love was still visible on her thigh.
