Maggi Hambling, Sebastian in a Hermes scarf, 2004

Maggi Hambling captures the dandy Sebastian Horsley in this commission for fashion brand Hermes. Sure of his own sartorial style, Horsley rejected everything in the Hermes range, except for a trademark silk scarf. And so he sat for his portrait wearing nothing else. The result is alive with Hambling's rapid strokes and became the lead image for her exhibition Touch. "Sebastian would have been pleased," Hambling mused, "to be so well hung in the British Museum."
